The old matriarch’s residence exuded grandeur from the moment one stepped inside. The courtyard, teeming with blooming flowers, created a lively and festive atmosphere. Upon entering, Xin An felt a wave of joy—it was the kind of opulence that made her feel youthful, as if the vitality of the surroundings seeped into her soul.

As they crossed the courtyard and ascended the steps to the main hall, the splendor became even more overwhelming. Two colossal porcelain vases with depictions of maidens admiring flowers stood prominently in the corners, their glazed surfaces gleaming with exquisite artistry. The craftsmanship was nothing short of priceless.

To the side was a gilded screen, its golden butterflies shimmering under the soft light filtering through the windows. Nearby, a curio shelf was packed with treasures, from delicate porcelain vases adorned with fresh roses to rare and intricate ornaments. Even the plush carpet underfoot, adorned with patterns that Xin An couldn’t decipher, screamed luxury.

The old matriarch, though smiling warmly, was carefully observing her two new granddaughters-in-law. Tao Yiran’s furrowed brows betrayed her disdain for the ostentatious display of wealth, which she deemed vulgar. In contrast, Xin An’s unabashed admiration showcased her unrefined excitement. Coming from a merchant family, Xin An wasn’t accustomed to such wealth—having money didn’t necessarily grant access to treasures like these.

In her previous life, Xin An had eagerly sought the old matriarch’s favor, driven by her desire to win benefits for Tang Rong and her genuine love for such extravagant items. Over time, many of these treasures had come into her possession, only for Tang Rong to dismiss them as tasteless and forbid her from using them.

Tang Mo, standing beside Xin An, shared her fascination. The look of awe on his face mirrored hers. Seeing their mutual delight, the old matriarch felt a sense of relief—at least someone appreciated her taste.

Tang Yong’s wife, Madame You, was the first to break the silence. “The two new granddaughters-in-law truly live up to their reputation for beauty. Eldest Brother and Sister-in-law, you must be so proud.”

Tang Yong, a son born out of wedlock, had long been estranged from the main family. His father had sought to protect him from potential conflicts within the household by arranging for him to live separately. Madame You, however, never ceased her attempts to ingratiate herself with the main branch, hoping to secure opportunities for her children.

Tang Gang and Madame Wang responded with polite smiles, and the old matriarch mirrored their warmth. The atmosphere was amicable as everyone exchanged pleasantries.

Madame Wang graciously replied, “It’s all thanks to you, Sister-in-law. Your presence brightens the occasion.”

Madame You didn’t hesitate to add, “Seeing Second Son support his wife so thoughtfully earlier, I can already see how much he has matured.”

Madame Wang beamed with pride. “Thank you for your kind words. Indeed, marriage teaches responsibility.”

As tea was prepared for the new brides to present, Tang Rong and Tao Yiran stepped forward first. Kneeling before the old matriarch, they respectfully offered her tea. The old matriarch accepted with delight, offering blessings and a red envelope as gifts.

When it was Tang Mo and Xin An’s turn, they knelt before the old matriarch, who observed them carefully. Xin An’s radiant appearance, accentuated by the set of ruby jewelry gifted by the old matriarch, drew a look of approval.

“You look beautiful, child,” the old matriarch said warmly. “That headpiece suits you perfectly.”

Madame Wang chimed in, “Mother has impeccable taste, and Xin An’s beauty makes it shine even more.”

Standing to the side, Madame You’s envious gaze flickered between Xin An and Tao Yiran. The disparity in treatment was glaring, and Tao Yiran’s expression was unreadable as her eyes lingered on Xin An’s jewels.

When it was Tang Gang’s turn to receive tea, his words were laced with subtle favoritism. “You must remember your duty as a son of the Marquis’ household—respect your elders, honor your brother, and live peacefully with your wife.”

Tang Mo’s expression remained impassive, though the veiled comparison didn’t go unnoticed. When it was Wang Shi’s turn, her eyes welled with tears of joy.
“Marriage marks the beginning of independence. From now on, you must be steady and reliable. Don’t disappoint your father.”

“Treat each other with kindness. You have a long journey ahead together. You may rise.”

Finally, the couple moved to Tang Yong’s side. Xin An’s deference was evident, her attitude toward the second branch notably respectful. Her thoughts, however, drifted to her past life, recalling how Tang Yong had been one of the few who had supported her during her darkest times. The memory stirred a surge of emotions that threatened to overwhelm her.

Sensing her unease, Tang Mo subtly squeezed her hand, grounding her. Xin An took a deep breath, regaining her composure as they resumed their positions. Though standing together, the undercurrents of the family dynamics left their mark—distinctions in treatment, loyalties, and ambitions all woven into the fabric of this seemingly harmonious gathering.

After lunch, the matriarch, feeling drowsy from the hawthorn water, suggested everyone return to their courtyards for a rest. The family members dispersed.

Back in the Autumn Harvest Courtyard, Xin An collapsed unceremoniously onto the chaise lounge, yawning as tears gathered at the corners of her eyes. Chunyang and Chunlü helped her remove her hairpins and jewelry, set out some tea, and then quietly left.

Tang Mo sat admiring the pastel vase he had acquired. “This thing is truly exquisite—easily worth a thousand taels. I saw clearly that Tang Rong wanted it. Lucky for me, I’m smarter and didn’t let him get his way.”

Xin An, propped up on one arm and idly toying with a jade pendant at her waist, mused aloud, “Do you think I was too lively today? I’m afraid I may have caught your father’s attention.”

“So what?” Tang Mo carefully set the vase in a safe place. “He cares too much about his reputation to criticize you openly. If he dares, I’ll quietly spread the word and see how he manages to show his face in court.”

“As for everyone else, don’t worry. My mother will definitely support you. She’ll think you’ve come to your senses and decided to settle down and live well. And as for those two in the Spring Blossoms Courtyard—one thinks she’s a goddess, the other acts like the moon in the sky. Do you think they’ll stoop to fight over mundane things?”

“Didn’t you notice they hardly said a word today?”

Xin An smirked. “They’ve probably already dismissed us as petty and vulgar, thinking we’re nothing but opportunistic sycophants.”

Tang Mo shrugged. “Let them think that. At most, they’ll call us opportunistic, sycophantic, or greedy. It’s not like we’ll lose any sleep over it.”

Tang Mo dragged a stool over to sit in front of Xin An, grinning mischievously. “So, tell me what the matriarch likes. If I can figure her out, I can curry favor too. No reason for you to shoulder all the work, right?”

Xin An had intended to share her insights, but she set a condition. “Any benefits we gain—split evenly. And if I ever need help, you must assist me unconditionally.”

“Of course!” Tang Mo agreed without hesitation. Today, their coordinated efforts had easily won the matriarch’s favor. Compared to his previous life—where he struggled alone, dragging an ungrateful wife who reaped his rewards while criticizing him—this was practically a dream.

Xin An beckoned him closer and, in a hushed voice, explained the matriarch’s preferences. Tang Mo’s eyes lit up with excitement. “Pace yourself,” he cautioned. “Don’t overdo it. We have to take it step by step.”

“She’s actually quite decent,” Xin An said, resting her chin on her hand. “She enjoys the good life but doesn’t make things difficult for anyone. If she doesn’t like someone, she simply avoids them. Before her death, she even instructed that all her treasures should remain in the household rather than being buried with her.”

Xin An continued, “You should visit the Imperial Medical Bureau and get some Nourishing Pills. Bring plenty—half for the matriarch and half for me. If she lives a long life, it will benefit us both.”

Tang Mo nodded vigorously. Then he asked, curiosity piqued, “By the way, what’s your grudge against Tang Yong? I could feel your anger earlier.”

Xin An’s gaze darkened. Thinking of Tang Yong brought back memories of Tang Gang’s incompetence and Tang Rong’s treachery. “There are things I’m not ready to discuss yet. Earlier, during the tea ceremony, I was reminded of past events. If I had a poisoned cup in hand, I’d have killed Tang Rong on the spot. My frustration wasn’t directed at your second uncle.”

She paused, her voice dropping. “In fact, just looking at you is irritating enough. The only reason I haven’t expressed it is because I’m still in control.”

Tang Mo’s lips twitched. “You’re still angry after I died in the last life? You’re holding a grudge even now?”

Xin An shook her head. It wasn’t him she resented—it was Tang Mo’s son, Tang Hui. “You’re lucky I still have some sense. Otherwise, I’d have dealt with you already.”

Tang Mo’s curiosity grew. “Do you remember what your second uncle’s son, Tang Yaoming, was up to around this time?”

Tang Mo, who had returned earlier in this timeline, knew more than she did. “He barely scraped by in the imperial exams. My second uncle wants to secure a decent post for him. He came to ask my father for help half a month ago, but the old man refused, claiming it would look bad. He’s just lazy.”

Xin An’s expression turned contemplative. “Your second uncle was far more reliable than your father. When the marquisate fell, he ran himself ragged trying to help.” She fixed Tang Mo with a piercing gaze. “Do you want to inherit the marquisate?”

Tang Mo blinked, startled. “I’m the legitimate son; of course I’m eligible.”

“But if Tang Rong inherits the title, you and I will be at his mercy for the rest of our lives. Is that what you want?”

Xin An raised an eyebrow. “If not, then let’s plan. Go lock the door.”

Tang Mo sprang to his feet, locking the door before eagerly returning. “I already have a plan.”

The two huddled together, whispering with increasing excitement.

Meanwhile, in the Spring Blossoms Courtyard, Tao Yiran sat fuming. She stared at the vase with the wilting rose Tang Rong had plucked earlier. The sight only soured her mood further. Despite being a newlywed granddaughter-in-law, she felt she had been treated differently today.

“What’s wrong? You seem upset.”

Tang Rong placed a hand on her shoulder. Her eyes reddened as she lowered her head to wipe away tears. “Does Grandmother dislike me? I could tell—she thinks I’m not a proper lady, and now she’s cold to you because of me. I’ve dragged you down. Maybe I should just go back home.”

“Nonsense.”

Tang Rong’s own feelings were complicated. Today had left a bitter taste in his mouth. For years, he had been the center of attention, admired by all. But today, he had played second fiddle. “Neither of us cares about being in the spotlight, so why let it bother us?”

“Grandmother is easy enough to get along with. Spend more time talking to her, and she’ll come to like you.”

His thoughts drifted to the yellow jade peony. Smiling faintly, he said, “That yellow jade peony would suit you perfectly. When the time is right, I’ll ask Grandmother to give it to you.”

Tao Yiran’s eyes brightened, though she replied modestly, “The jade peony is truly exquisite, but I saw that Second Sister-in-law liked it too. Let her have it.”

“You’re too kind,” Tang Rong said, sitting beside her and taking her hand. “Marrying you is the greatest fortune of my life. Father mentioned he’ll secure me a position next month. Rest assured, I’ll ensure you earn the honorific title you deserve. No one will look down on you.”

Tao Yiran beamed. “I knew you were the finest man in the world.”

“Is it with the Northern Guard again?” she asked.

Tang Rong shook his head. “Father offered me the Northern Guard post, but I saw how much Second Brother wanted it and let him have it. Father is arranging a position for me at the Ministry of Rites instead. Minister Wang mentioned they need someone to handle foreign emissaries. I think it’s worth a try.”

Tao Yiran, full of admiration, responded softly, “Wherever you go, I know you’ll excel.”

As they exchanged sweet words, servants arrived with Tang Rong’s mother’s dowry. Seeing the mound of chests fill the courtyard, Tao Yiran’s eyes lit up with delight.

“These are all Mother’s dowry?”

Tang Rong nodded, instructing the servants to lock them in the storeroom. “My maternal family used to be wealthy, and Mother was favored at home. That’s why her dowry was so extensive. Unfortunately, my uncle has fallen on hard times and hasn’t returned to the capital in years.”

Cai Gu, ever cautious, suggested, “Young Master, we should open the chests and inspect the contents. Such valuable items must be verified.”

Tang Rong dismissed her concern with a wave. “I checked yesterday. Everything is in order. You worry too much.”

Xin An couldn’t remember the last time she had acted coy and playful—probably sometime before she got married. Yet today, slipping back into the girlish demeanor felt as natural as breathing. Her antics had the matriarch laughing so hard that tears were streaming down her face. “Hurry up and pick something! Can’t you see the second young master is getting impatient?”

Only then did Xin An casually point toward an item. “That one.”

It was the same pastel vase Tang Rong had been eyeing earlier. The matriarch chuckled. “You have a good eye. That vase was a tribute to the imperial court, gifted to me by the Empress Dowager during my visit to the palace last year. It’s part of a pair—one of which was given to the old matriarch of the Duke of Zhenbei’s household.”

Startled, Xin An gasped and covered her mouth. “It’s so precious. In that case, I don’t want it.”

The matriarch called for Ganlu to fetch a box to store the vase and patted Xin An’s hand. “Nonsense. I said you could choose whatever you liked, and no matter what you picked, I’d be happy. While this treasure was bestowed by the Empress Dowager, it’s mine to do with as I please.”

“Take it to your room and display it there. Just looking at it will bring joy.”

Xin An and Tang Mo eagerly stepped forward to thank her, their faces beaming with delight. Tang Mo, ever the joker, cracked another string of lighthearted remarks, making the matriarch laugh so hard that her cheeks ached.

As Ganlu carried away the pastel vase, she replaced it with a large yellow jade peony carving. The craftsmanship was so intricate, and the jade so lustrous, that everyone in the room couldn’t help but marvel. Seeing the crowd’s admiration, the matriarch was visibly pleased.

Tang Rong, however, couldn’t take his eyes off it. Yellow jade was his favorite, and this carving, with its flawless color and enormous size, was a rare masterpiece. It was the size of a soup bowl and entirely free of blemishes—an extraordinary find.

Xin An and Tang Mo exchanged a quick glance. In their previous lives, they had fiercely competed over this very treasure. Tang Mo had wanted it for its monetary value, intending to use it as leverage in a major deal. Xin An had coveted it because Tang Rong adored yellow jade and had repeatedly whispered about it in her ear.

Eventually, the peony had ended up in Xin An’s possession, but not for long. Tang Rong had given it away to secure a promising future for his beloved nephew, Tang Hui.

“Grandmother’s treasures are truly beyond compare,” Tang Mo said, his voice filled with admiration. “I didn’t even know such exquisite items existed.”

“Don’t just flatter her,” Xin An chimed in. “Even I had no idea, and I’ve been here for days. Grandmother, you’re incredible!”

The matriarch chuckled, clearly enjoying the attention. “This piece was brought back as spoils of war by your grandfather after a victorious campaign. He handed it over to the emperor, who then rewarded him with it.”

Everyone gathered closer to admire the carving. Wang Shi, recalling the Marquis’s many military achievements, couldn’t help but feel a tinge of envy toward the matriarch’s blessed life. To have a husband who could win such treasures and then bring them home to her—it was the kind of fortune few women could boast.

Tang Rong, noticing Xin An’s playful remarks, felt annoyed but remained polite. “Grandmother’s collection is truly remarkable. This yellow jade peony is a sight to behold.”

Xin An added with a mischievous smile, “Grandmother, your collection is so magnificent. I might have to visit every day just to see this peony. Please don’t get tired of me.”

The matriarch, charmed by her humor, replied, “Good, good! Come visit often. After some time, I might just let you take this peony to your room as well.”

Xin An laughed brightly. “I’d be content just to look at it. Such a valuable piece doesn’t belong in my room. I’d end up suspecting everyone who came near it and would have to stay home to guard it day and night.”

Tang Mo joined in with a grin. “Then I’ll guard it for you—holding it while I sleep, if I must.”

“Hahaha!” The matriarch burst into laughter, thoroughly enjoying herself. Wang Shi’s face lit up with joy as she joined in the merriment, while Tang Gang found himself glancing repeatedly at Xin An.

By contrast, Tao Yiran stood stiffly with an aloof expression, her brows slightly furrowed. Tang Gang couldn’t help but feel frustrated. The second daughter-in-law’s quick wit had already charmed the matriarch into giving her two treasures in as many days. Tao Yiran, on the other hand, simply stood there, doing nothing to counterbalance the situation.

He regretted the decision he had made the previous day to grant Tang Mo the opportunity with the Northern Guard. The second branch had already reaped far too many benefits.

In her good mood, the matriarch instructed Ganlu to bring out a few more treasures for everyone to admire. Xin An and Tang Mo continued their enthusiastic praise, their lively commentary keeping the matriarch entertained. Wang Shi chimed in occasionally, while Tang Gang offered the occasional remark. Tang Rong maintained a polite but distant smile, and Tao Yiran’s eyes stayed fixed on the treasures, her expression unreadable.

When lunchtime arrived, the table was laden with delicacies. Xin An, who had eaten sparingly during her wedding day and barely touched food yesterday, was ravenous. Memories of the harsh days following the family’s downfall made the lavish feast even more tempting.

Tradition dictated that she should stand and serve the elders, but the growling of her stomach betrayed her hunger. The matriarch, noticing, excused the younger generation from such formalities, understanding that they hadn’t eaten properly over the past few days.

Relieved, Xin An quietly polished off a bowl of rice, then smiled at a maid to request another. Tao Yiran, by contrast, barely touched her half-filled bowl, maintaining an air of restraint.

The matriarch, who had grown up in a wealthy farming family, had always loved good food. After marrying into the Marquis’s household, her husband had risen to prominence, transforming her into a grand lady of the capital. But her appetite for hearty meals never waned. Seeing Xin An eat so heartily, the matriarch joked, “Watching the second granddaughter-in-law eat so well has whetted my own appetite. Ganlu, serve me another bowl.”

“Mother, be mindful of your digestion,” Tang Gang warned.

The matriarch waved him off with a smile. “It’s nothing a bowl of hawthorn soup and a good walk after lunch won’t fix.”

Understanding her perfectly, Xin An added, “My grandmother used to say that a good appetite is a blessing. When someone falls ill, they’ll pay any price to recover, all so they can enjoy food again. Grandmother’s appetite and health are our family’s good fortune.”

The matriarch beamed with joy, while Tang Gang, chastened, fell silent. His gaze shifted to Tao Yiran, who sat quietly with a faint frown. He couldn’t help but recall his late father’s insistence that Tang Rong marry the Xin family’s daughter. If the marriage had gone as planned, would he now be spared the worry of managing Tang Rong’s affairs?

After the tea ceremony for the new daughters-in-law, Tang Gang and the rest of the family showed no signs of leaving. They insisted on staying to chat with the matriarch and declared that such an auspicious day deserved a family meal together. Tang Yong, ever perceptive, volunteered to leave, but not a single person from the Marquis’s household made any effort to stop him—not even out of courtesy.

Once the room was left to just the immediate family, Tang Gang seemed hesitant to speak, but the matriarch directly inquired about the dowry left by Tang Rong’s mother. Tang Gang calmly presented the remaining dowry to Tang Rong in full view of everyone. Several large locked chests were brought in, and though no one could see their contents, their sheer number suggested there wasn’t much missing.

Tang Mo exchanged a glance with Wang Shi, who took the cue and said to Tang Rong, “Yesterday, your father mentioned giving three-tenths of your mother’s dowry to your younger brother and sister-in-law. However, your sister-in-law told me that she had no reason to accept your mother’s belongings. Your father and I discussed it, and we’ve decided that it should all go to you. To show goodwill, we will instead give two thousand taels of silver to your brother and sister-in-law.”

Caught off guard, Tang Rong couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off, though he couldn’t pinpoint why. Bowing slightly, he said, “Everything shall be as Father and Mother decide.”

A small box was then brought to Xin An. When she opened it, she saw neatly stacked banknotes inside. Tao Yiran, who had been watching closely, suddenly felt suffocated. Both daughters-in-law had only just entered the household, yet the second branch had already received a property, an extravagant headpiece, and now silver. Tao Yiran wasn’t someone who cared about mundane possessions, but this blatant favoritism was like a slap to her face, a reminder of her supposed inadequacy.

However, Xin An closed the box without hesitation and personally handed it back to Wang Shi.
“Mother, last night the second young master and I had a heartfelt discussion. He promised to treat me well in the future. Since I chose not to leave with my family yesterday, it means I have decided to make this marriage work. How, then, could I accept this silver?”

“Please keep it. Managing the household is no easy task, and the expenses are significant. Consider this my small contribution.”

Wang Shi’s eyes lit up with joy.
“Good child! Are you truly sincere?”

“Absolutely,” Xin An replied firmly.

Moved to tears, Wang Shi turned to the matriarch. “Mother, did you hear that?”

The matriarch, who had been observing with satisfaction, nodded approvingly.
“If the girl has truly come to terms with things, that is a blessing for the second young master—and for you as her mother-in-law.”

She then addressed her maid, Ganlu, “Bring me the crown gifted by the Empress years ago, along with the pink tourmaline bracelet.”

Tang Mo silently marveled at the scene, muttering inwardly, So that’s her game. She sacrifices a small reward to claim a larger prize. It was a lesson he wouldn’t soon forget.

The items were quickly retrieved. The crown, crafted in the palace, was incomparably exquisite, its value evident in its lustrous pearls. The pink tourmaline bracelet, though also stunning, paled in comparison to the crown.

The matriarch handed the bracelet to Tao Yiran first, speaking of its rarity and how its pink hues complemented her complexion.
“You have jade-like skin. Pink suits you best,” the matriarch said warmly.

Tao Yiran accepted it with a polite smile. Though the bracelet was undoubtedly a fine piece, standing next to the crown made it seem lackluster. She replied, “Thank you, Grandmother,” but her lack of enthusiasm displeased the matriarch.

As the matriarch handed the crown to Xin An, Xin An performed an impromptu display of astonishment and gratitude. She moved through expressions of shock, disbelief, joy, and reverence so fluidly that it left the matriarch thoroughly delighted.

This was exactly how she wanted her gifts to be received—with reverence and heartfelt appreciation that made her feel respected and valued.

The matriarch patted Xin An’s hand, her heart brimming with affection.
“Good child, come visit me often when you have time. I’d love to hear you talk.”

“Even if you didn’t ask, I would, Grandmother,” Xin An replied with a sweet smile. “From the moment I met you, I felt a special bond. You remind me so much of my own grandmother—kind and gentle.”

The matriarch laughed heartily, her fondness for Xin An growing stronger. Xin An’s smile grew even brighter, and though she didn’t realize it, her youthful exuberance seemed to return in that moment.

Tang Mo, seeing how easily Xin An had won favor, tried to emulate her. He approached the matriarch with a playful grin and said, “Grandmother, you’ve become so partial. Now that you have a granddaughter-in-law, it seems you’ve forgotten about your grandson. I think you’re the kindest grandmother in the world. Don’t you think I deserve a reward too?”

Xin An nearly broke into laughter, though her skin crawled at his saccharine tone. But the matriarch was thoroughly amused.
“This rascal! You’ve been eyeing the treasures in my room for years. Now that you’ve finally worked up the courage to ask, you’ve caught me in a good mood.”

Still smiling, the matriarch added, “Very well, I won’t play favorites. You and your brother can each choose one item from the treasure shelf.”

The items on the matriarch’s treasure shelf were known for their exorbitant value. Tang Mo’s spirits lifted, silently agreeing that following Xin An’s lead was proving fruitful.

“I knew Grandmother loved me!” Tang Mo exclaimed. Turning to Tang Rong, he said, “Elder Brother, you should choose first.”

Tang Rong, disdainful of their sycophantic behavior, scanned the shelf and eventually selected a vibrant monthly rose from a celadon vase. He presented it with a flourish, explaining, “Grandmother’s treasures are beyond compare, but I cannot bear to take what you hold dear. This rose, with its subtle elegance, is enough for me.”

His performance—deliberate and gallant—won Tao Yiran’s adoration, evident in her blushing cheeks. Tang Rong glanced at her, the corners of his lips curling into a satisfied smile.

Seeing this, Tang Mo hesitated. Tang Rong’s flawless act had once again stolen the spotlight. Tang Mo wasn’t sure how to respond but suddenly had an idea.
Turning to Xin An, he said, “What about you? Which one would you like? I’ll take it for you.”

Feigning shyness, Xin An looked at the matriarch.
“Grandmother, you see how he is!”

The matriarch, still upset by Tang Rong’s earlier dampening of the mood, burst into laughter at Xin An’s endearing act.
“It’s a sign he cares for you. You should be happy!”

“Even Grandmother is teasing me!” Xin An exclaimed, her laughter mingling with the matriarch’s.

The joyous atmosphere erased any lingering tensions, and Xin An’s charm once again proved irresistible.

“Your room has been cleaned and prepared in the side wing. Your things have already been moved. Starting tonight, you’ll stay there,” Xin An declared as Tang Mo entered the Autumn Harvest Courtyard. She stood with the unmistakable authority of the mistress of the house, banishing him from his rightful place.

Tang Mo let out a mocking laugh, feigning indifference. “As if I’d want to share a room with you.”

Xin An ignored him entirely, her patience worn thin after a long, chaotic day. Though her body was youthful, her soul felt aged, burdened by weariness. She was determined to rest, hoping to rejuvenate both her spirit and her attitude.

That evening, Tang Mo begrudgingly settled into the side wing. Not long after he entered, a maid named Nan Feng brought in water to serve him. Moments later, the sound of a furious “Get out!” echoed from the room, followed by Nan Feng fleeing in tears.

Curious, Chunyang went to investigate and returned with a smirk. “Apparently, Nan Feng has been serving Second Young Master since childhood and was hoping to become his concubine after his marriage. She tried her luck tonight, only to be thrown out.”

“Serves her right!” said Chunlü, helping Xin An remove her hairpins. “At least Second Young Master seems straightforward compared to the pomp and ceremony around the Heir.”

Xin An raised an eyebrow, amused. “The Heir certainly enjoys his comforts. He even has two personal maids, Xueyu and Yingyue. They’re pretty, educated, and perfectly suited for a refined gentleman like him. I wonder if they’ve been as obedient in this lifetime as they were in the last.”

Chunlü, arranging Xin An’s hair, chuckled. “I still think Second Young Master is more genuine, even if he’s rough around the edges.”

“You don’t know what you’re saying,” Chunyang scolded. “Today he even talked about strangling our lady. He looked serious enough to make me worried. We’ll need to be extra careful from now on.”

Xin An laughed. “Don’t worry. He’s all talk. He wouldn’t dare.”

She adjusted a ruby earring and turned to her maids. “Keep an eye on the household, especially Spring Blossom Courtyard. Report anything amusing to me. I could use some entertainment.”

Chunlü nodded enthusiastically. “Don’t worry, ma’am. Now that we’re rivals with Spring Blossom Courtyard, we won’t miss a chance to see their missteps.”

Meanwhile, in his new quarters, Tang Mo lay awake, straining to hear sounds from Xin An’s room. Perhaps she’d start mumbling in her sleep, and he could sneak over to extract more secrets.

At dawn, Xin An rose to prepare for the ceremony of serving tea as a new bride. Her maids carefully dressed her, while Tang Mo, having lost Nan Feng’s service, struggled to dress himself and had a young servant boy, Lai Lai, help comb his hair.

Adjusting her appearance in the mirror, Xin An sought to brighten her expression. Before she could perfect her look, Tang Mo’s mocking voice cut through the air.

“You should smile more. You’re so stiff and sour—like an old lady who’s had enough of life.”

Xin An’s maids bristled with indignation. Chunyang snapped, “How could she smile after all she’s endured? She’s barely slept, and you expect her to act like nothing happened?”

Chunlü chimed in, “If she were all smiles now, people would think she’s thrilled to have traded husbands!”

Tang Mo smirked. “You two maids have quite the attitude.”

Xin An turned, her ruby earrings catching the light. “Your maid was so ‘sweet and considerate,’ yet you threw her out. My maids are new and unsure of your preferences. Perhaps they thought you liked the ‘fierce and menacing’ type.”

Her maids, emboldened by her words, puffed up proudly while continuing to dress her. They brought her a sweet soup and peach blossom pastries for breakfast, leaving Tang Mo entirely ignored.

Watching this camaraderie, Tang Mo’s stomach growled. No one even noticed I haven’t eaten. Aren’t I worthy of a meal? Already sidelined!

As Xin An and Tang Mo left the courtyard, they encountered Tang Rong and Tao Yiran waiting at the gate. With his ever-present polite smile, Tang Rong greeted them, “Second Brother, Second Sister-in-law, let’s head over together.”

Tang Mo barely suppressed an eye roll. Here he goes again, putting on a show of brotherly love and unity.

While Tang Rong’s time in the ancestral hall had been cut short after just an hour, Tang Mo knew he wouldn’t have been so lucky. If it were me, I’d be kneeling until my legs broke.

Xin An studied the pair. Tang Rong, ever the master of appearances, showed no sign of discomfort despite the prior day’s drama. Tao Yiran, stunning as ever, was adorned in festive colors. Her bright eyes and delicate blush betrayed her recent intimacy with Tang Rong.

As Tao Yiran’s gaze met Xin An’s, her confidence faltered. Unlike her composed self in the past, she now seemed unsettled, her lashes fluttering as she looked away. Tang Rong, noticing her discomfort, tenderly held her hand and led her ahead.

Xin An and Tang Mo exchanged knowing glances. Without speaking, they both silently mocked their former partners: See? The ones you trusted never cared about you.

For Xin An, her love for Tang Rong had long since burned out, replaced by disdain. Tang Mo, on the other hand, felt a complex mix of emotions. His disappointment in Tao Yiran was raw, but he resolved to move forward with renewed clarity.

Crossing the gardens and bridge, the group arrived at the hall, where Tang Gang, Lady Wang, and other family members, including Tang Yong and his family, were already waiting.

A servant announced their arrival with a beaming smile, “The Heir and the Heir’s Wife, along with Second Young Master and Second Young Mistress, have arrived.”

Tang Rong and Tao Yiran entered first. Behind them, Tang Mo thoughtfully helped Xin An over the threshold.

As he did so, he recalled Xin An’s earlier remark about how his father valued appearances. He decided to put it to the test, starting with this gesture of newfound maturity.

After all, he was now an official with an important appointment—though he hadn’t reported for duty yet.

In the Autumn Harvest Courtyard, Xin An sat calmly, enjoying a bowl of bird’s nest porridge. Watching her relaxed demeanor, Tang Mo couldn’t help but make a snide remark.

“You’re quite generous, aren’t you? Just giving up three-tenths of the dowry like that.”

Xin An placed the bowl down gracefully and replied, “Switching brides may be disgraceful, but it’s the Tang family’s reputation that’s tarnished, not mine. For your dear elder brother, it’s a trivial matter.”

“When outsiders hear of it, they’ll dismiss it as a romantic escapade or a joke. Your brother will play the part of a remorseful man, downing a bitter drink while sighing about his regrets. ‘I even gave her three-tenths of my late mother’s dowry,’ he’ll say. And what will they think of me? A petty woman who made a fuss over it.”

She smirked and added, “Besides, do you even know how much of that dowry is left?”

The good items had long been swapped out or squandered by Tang Gang and Tang Rong, leaving behind trinkets with little real value.

Turning to Tang Mo, she couldn’t resist mocking him. “Your father’s handling of matters is quite fascinating. When he died such a pitiful death, it was truly fitting.”

Tang Mo leaned forward, intrigued. “Go on. Entertain me with the details.”

As a child, he had always been overshadowed by his elder brother, who received all the attention and resources while he was left with scraps. Tang Rong even made a show of giving him “gifts” in front of others, earning himself a reputation for being generous and kind while Tang Mo was painted as greedy and petty.

Xin An rolled her shoulders. “I won’t talk about it. It’s bad luck.”

Still curious, Tang Mo pressed, “At least tell me if his death was tragic.”

“Not at all,” Xin An said bluntly. “He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his children and grandchildren.”

Tang Mo rolled his eyes, clearly disappointed.

Xin An smirked. “That’s your father. Maybe you should learn to fake grief better. Take a page from your brother’s book—pretend to be filial while doing absolutely nothing. People will praise you as the perfect son.”

“Let me tell you something: your father doesn’t actually like your brother that much. He only favors him because Tang Rong brings him face-saving compliments from others. If you can make him proud, you’ll be his new favorite.”

Tang Mo pondered her words, stroking his chin. “You really think so?”

“Do I have any reason to lie?” Xin An shrugged.

“Swear on it,” Tang Mo challenged. “Swear that if you’re lying, this is all just a dream. You’ll wake up old and miserable, still humiliated by Tang Rong.”

“Vile!” Xin An spat at him. “Believe it or not, I don’t care.”

Their bickering resumed until Tang Mo steered the conversation back. “You don’t want the dowry or the household management? That’s a big change for someone who used to fight tooth and nail for them.”

“Experience changes people,” Xin An replied candidly. “Ask your mother how hard it is to maintain this family. Apart from the old lady and you, no one here is truly wealthy.”

Tang Mo stiffened. “Me? Wealthy?”

Xin An chuckled. “Do you want to guess how Tao Yiran spent your hoarded fortune after you died?”

Seeing Tang Mo’s face darken, she continued, “At least half of it ended up in my hands, which ultimately benefited your beloved brother. The rest? Tang Rong got his share too.”

Tang Mo’s expression turned thunderous, his hands clenched into fists. The idea of his money falling into Tang Rong’s hands after his death made him seethe.

He glared at Xin An and growled, “I feel like strangling you right now.”

Just as he said this, Chunyang entered with tea, startled by his words. She slammed the teapot down and glared at him.

“Master Tang, you’ve gone too far!” she snapped.

Tang Mo stared at the audacious maid, contemplating whether he should strangle both her and her mistress.

Meanwhile, Tang Rong had a long night ahead. When he learned that half of his mother’s dowry was already gone, his dissatisfaction was evident. His initial suspicion was that his stepmother had embezzled it, but the detailed records left him speechless.

Tang Gang quickly dismissed any thought of exposing the matter, stressing the importance of preserving their family’s reputation. Tang Rong agreed; he had no desire for rumors of his extravagant lifestyle to spread.

“I’ll give you what remains of the dowry tomorrow,” Tang Gang assured him. “Just act as though you received it all.”

Father and son chose silence, pretending the issue never happened, which suited Lady Wang perfectly.

Later, Tang Mo approached his mother, curious about her schemes.

Lady Wang, clearly pleased, said, “Of course they stayed quiet. Your father cares too much about appearances to let this leak. And your brother? He’s too invested in his virtuous image to cause a fuss.”

“Those two have spent so lavishly over the years, they probably can’t even account for everything they’ve used.”

Tang Mo’s smile widened. It seemed that manipulating his biased father and hypocritical brother would be easier than he had imagined—especially now that Xin An was on his side.

Lady Wang cautioned, “Don’t waste any more thoughts on Tao Yiran. She’s vain and pretentious, not worth your time. Xin An, on the other hand, is capable and resourceful. She supported her family’s business and practically raised her brother. If she chooses to help you, you’ll be in a much better position.”

Tang Mo nodded. “I know what I’m doing, Mother.”

Lady Wang sighed. “Your father listens to me on most things, but not when it comes to Tang Rong. You’ll have to fight for what you want yourself. At least now, you have an ally. Don’t squander this chance.”

“Also, don’t rush into consummating the marriage. Be patient and act like a gentleman.”

Tang Mo scoffed inwardly. Even if I wanted to, do you think Xin An would let me near her?

In the Spring Blossoms Courtyard, Madam Tao jabbed a finger at Tao Yiran’s forehead, her frustration palpable. “If you had told us earlier that you were interested in Tang Mo, your father would have fought to secure that match for you. When the old Marquis and the Xin family arranged the engagement, they never specified it had to be Tang Rong. This entire fiasco could have been avoided.”

“You have no idea how disgraceful Xin Kuan’s words were. He all but called you a shameless harlot. If I hadn’t deflected the blame onto Tang Rong, the Tao family’s reputation would have been utterly ruined. The rest of the family would have torn you apart!”

Her voice brimmed with disappointment as she continued, “Do you realize what’s happened now? Your late mother-in-law’s dowry, which should have been handed to you, has been divided—three parts given away, along with a valuable estate.”

“And that’s not even the worst of it. The rights to manage the household, once relinquished, are almost impossible to regain, even for a direct mother-in-law. For a second wife, it’s practically hopeless.”

“To top it all off, Tang Mo was just assigned a position that was originally reserved for Tang Rong. Do you even know what that means?”

The Northern Guard was a coveted placement among noble sons—a hub for networking and opportunities. Securing a spot there wasn’t guaranteed, even for someone like Tang Gang, who now couldn’t secure a second position for Tang Rong.

The more Madam Tao thought about it, the angrier she became. If not for the consummation of her daughter’s marriage, she might have taken her back home right then and there.

Tao Yiran, however, felt deeply wronged. She had been stunned when she realized the groom wasn’t Tang Mo, her initial surprise giving way to a fleeting joy before everything spiraled into chaos.

“The young lord promised to handle everything,” Tao Yiran said softly. “He said… he has feelings for me.”

Madam Tao remained unimpressed. She hadn’t believed Tang Rong’s excuses earlier, and she doubted others had either. If he truly had feelings for Tao Yiran, why hadn’t he proposed earlier? Why agree to marry Xin An instead?

“This whole situation reeks of dishonor. The virtuous and refined image of the young lord isn’t as genuine as it seems. From now on, you need to play the role of the understanding and aggrieved wife. Keep Tang Rong close, but don’t take everything he says at face value. Be cautious.”

When Wang Shi arrived, Madam Tao quickly masked her irritation, bracing herself for yet another exhausting round of polite maneuvering.

In the Autumn Harvest Courtyard, Madam Xin inspected the staff and was relieved to find no scheming faces among them. After ensuring her daughter was in good hands, she turned the conversation to their upcoming departure.

“We’ll be leaving for Huai Jiang in seven days. Your father has many responsibilities and can’t stay long. If the day ever comes when you don’t wish to remain here, send word, and the Xin family will come to take you home.”

Xin An was moved by her mother’s words, clinging to her arm like a child. She took the opportunity to remind her mother not to let the engagement between the Xin and Zhou families falter. In her past life, the Zhou family had been a pillar of support when the Xin family faced ruin, ensuring their losses were limited to their business and not their lives.

“I heard that Madam Zhou’s health has declined since her illness. The Imperial Medical Bureau reportedly has a pill that’s excellent for replenishing energy. Tomorrow, I’ll ask my mother-in-law to help me purchase some so you can bring it back to her.”

Madam Xin accepted the gesture without hesitation. “That old lady is a good person. The Zhou family has always been steadfast and loyal. Your father is thrilled with this match, and most importantly, your brother seems ecstatic. Have you seen him flitting around like a butterfly, trying to impress Miss Zhou?”

“Just wait. He’ll be off shopping for gifts in the next day or two.”

Xin An chuckled softly. These casual conversations with her mother were precious and nostalgic.

has a tonic called ‘Nourishing Pills’ that’s said to work wonders. Tomorrow, I’ll ask Mother-in-law to help me purchase some for you to bring back.”

That afternoon, after bidding farewell to the Xin and Tao families, Wang Shi and Tang Gang visited the old lady at Spring Honor Hall to discuss the day’s events. Although the old lady had stayed out of the drama, she had heard all the details.

“This is the best outcome we could hope for,” she remarked. “There will be talk in the capital, but as long as the three families present a united front, it will pass. And ensure the servants are disciplined. I won’t tolerate loose tongues.”

Wang Shi agreed, then brought up Xin An’s decision to decline the household management rights and the compensation.

“She said she plans to live peacefully with Tang Mo and doesn’t want what isn’t rightfully hers.”

Tang Gang, pleased with Xin An’s prudence, nodded. “She’s sensible and has a good sense of propriety.”

However, Wang Shi hesitated before broaching the topic of Tang Rong’s mother’s dowry. “By rights, the young lord should inherit his mother’s dowry after marriage. I began preparing to transfer it to him when his engagement was settled, but…”

Her voice trailed off, and her expression turned uneasy. The old lady understood immediately, while Tang Gang’s eyes narrowed. “Did you use it?” he asked sharply.

Wang Shi handed him a ledger. “Take a look, Marquis, and you’ll understand.”

Switching from military to civilian life had drained the family’s finances, and much of the dowry had been used to maintain their status. Wang Shi had meticulously documented every expense.

She then presented another ledger, detailing Tang Rong’s personal expenditures over the years.

“The young lord prefers Lake Ink, Jinzhou Xuan Paper, and gray hairbrushes. Last month, he spent 500 taels on an ivory folding fan from Qiongzhou. His room is scented with Thousand-Gold Cold Incense from the Imperial Medical Bureau. Some of these items came from his mother’s dowry, but most were purchased additionally.”

Tang Gang was shocked as he read the records. The extent of Tang Rong’s extravagance had gone unnoticed, and the weight of these revelations left him unsettled. His first instinct was to deflect blame.

“Why didn’t you rein him in as his mother?” he snapped.

Wang Shi, suppressing her anger, answered tearfully, “Marquis, you know how the capital operates. The sons of noble families are all expected to live lavishly. If our young lord had appeared lesser, how would others view the Marquis of Weiyuan?”

As she spoke, her eyes turned red and her voice was filled with tears. “It’s hard to be a stepmother. I do my best to take care of the prince. I never said anything when the prince used these things. I always pressured Mo’er to spend less, but in the end, I was still blamed.”

The matriarch spoke firmly.
“We promised the Xin family compensation. If we retract it now, how will you maintain your position in court? Since they declined to receive the dowry, you must give them 2,000 taels from your private funds.”

“Don’t hesitate. While no one may criticize us now, who knows what the future holds? The Xin family isn’t to be trifled with, as you’ve seen.”

Wang Shi took a deep breath. Tang Gang’s meager salary was barely enough to support himself. The so-called “private funds” were hers. Yet, with Tang Gang’s silent agreement, she had no choice but to comply.

Madam Cai staggered to her feet and retreated behind Tang Rong, who faced Xin An with a cold expression. Bowing slightly, he said, “It was my fault that you were startled, Sister-in-law. Thank you for your forgiveness. If you ever need anything, I will always be at your service. Please don’t let this matter weigh on your mind.”

Xin An wanted to continue scolding him, but with his father present, she held back. She regretted not seizing the earlier opportunity to say more. Given the current situation, any sharp words or displays of temper would be understandable—how could Tang Rong, self-proclaimed paragon of virtue, dare argue back?

If he had dared retort even a single word, she would have ensured he paid for it dearly. But alas, the moment had passed.

“There’s no need for the young lord to dwell on it either,” Xin An replied with a cold smile. “Second Young Master, despite his initial anger, didn’t retaliate or insult me. Instead, he offered me comfort and sat properly dressed all night. That alone proves his noble character and virtuous conduct.”

“Second Young Master is handsome, well-built, and though he may lack extraordinary talents, he is upright in character. Marrying him is no humiliation to me.”

Tang Mo stood quietly, though he subtly straightened his back, exuding confidence. Tang Gang scrutinized him and had to admit that his second son did have a fine appearance. From last night to now, Tang Mo had caused no trouble, showing that despite his usual recklessness, he could handle himself in critical moments.

“Your wife is an excellent woman. You must respect and cherish her,” Tang Gang declared.

Tang Mo bowed and replied, “I will, Father.”

“Good.” Tang Gang nodded. “Now that you’re married, it’s time to mature. In a few days, you will report to the Northern Guard.”

Tang Mo froze, his disbelief quickly replaced by joy. He had longed to join the Northern Guard for years, but his father had consistently refused. Unlike the Southern Guard, known for its deadly combat, the Northern Guard was a training ground for the sons of nobility. A few years there, coupled with the right connections, could lead to rapid advancement.

“Thank you, Father! I will not disappoint you,” Tang Mo exclaimed, barely able to contain his excitement.

Seeing his son’s delight, Tang Gang felt a twinge of warmth and softened slightly. Wang Shi, suppressing her own excitement, stepped in to smooth over the situation, finally bringing the chaos to an end.

Governor Tao, who had observed the entire scene, frowned. He couldn’t help but feel a sense of unease. The stark contrast was clear: his daughter had gained nothing but trouble, while Tang Mo’s household had reaped countless benefits.

The crowd dispersed quickly. Xin Kuan was pulled back to the front hall to continue drinking, and Tang Rong, who had planned to console Tao Yiran, was instead sent to the ancestral hall to reflect.

Wang Shi turned her full attention to Xin An, her words warm and affectionate. Madam Xin sighed in relief. She had once thought highly of Tang Rong, but today she saw him in a new light. His thick skin and shameless behavior were unmatched.

Now, however, even Tang Mo, whom she had previously disliked, seemed far more tolerable. Wang Shi lavished praise on Xin An, mentioning that in three days, she would transfer the household management rights to her.

Xin An, having managed the household in her previous life, was well aware of the complexities involved. She politely declined, her tone resolute.

“Mother, I deeply appreciate your kindness, but I am in no state to take on such responsibilities now. My mind is still in turmoil. I must trouble you to continue managing the household.”

Wang Shi, who had initially been reluctant to relinquish control, felt reassured. She had prepared herself to hand over the reins, consoling herself that at least her own daughter-in-law would have them, rather than Tao Yiran.

Seeing Xin An’s sincerity, Wang Shi softened further. “I understand how you feel. You’ve only just entered this household. Take your time to settle in. When you’re ready, come to me and I’ll teach you everything you need to know. The household management rights will always be yours when you want them.”

Xin An bowed in gratitude, and Wang Shi went on to address the matter of Tang Rong’s mother’s dowry. Xin An, knowing all too well the details of that dowry from her previous life, firmly declined.

“Mother, as I have married Tang Mo, I will dedicate myself to him. That dowry belonged to the young lord’s mother, and it would be improper for me to take it. I cannot accept it. Please handle it as you see fit.”

The Tang family, despite their noble title, lacked substantial wealth. Transitioning from military to civilian life had left them scrambling to maintain their status, with much of their facade propped up by borrowed funds. Xin An had no intention of investing even a single coin into the household unless she held absolute control.

Moreover, she had no desire to be tied to a dowry that could later be used against her.

Wang Shi, seeing her restraint, was filled with joy. She felt that all her efforts and sacrifices had been worthwhile. After a few more words of comfort, Wang Shi left to check on Tao Yiran in the Spring Blossoms Courtyard, knowing she needed to maintain appearances with the Tao family.

Once the room was cleared, Xin An shooed Tang Mo away and locked herself in with Madam Xin.

“I can’t believe the Tang family thought it acceptable to use Tang Rong’s mother’s dowry as compensation for you!” Madam Xin fumed.

Xin An chuckled softly. “The household accounts are probably strained. It’s no surprise.”

“Thank goodness you didn’t take on the household management. That Madam Cai is insufferable, and evenWang Shi can’t control her. If you had married Tang Rong, you’d be enduring her tyranny.”

“Honestly, you shouldn’t have intervened earlier. They should have beaten her to death.”

Xin An smiled faintly. “By sparing her, I’ve shown generosity. The household will see me as magnanimous. Sometimes, enduring small losses brings greater gains. That so-called ‘husband’ of mine is probably celebrating next door.”

Madam Xin laughed along. “I’ve realized Wang Shi doesn’t like Tao Yiran at all. I caught her smirking several times today. With her favor and Tang Mo’s newfound position, your life won’t be too difficult.”

“And that opportunistic son-in-law of mine is no fool. If you two support each other, life will surely turn out well.”

Xin An’s seemingly innocent question instantly pleased Wang Shi. As a second wife, Wang Shi had endured endless grievances from this particular servant. Madam Cai, who had served the late first wife and raised Tang Rong, wielded significant influence in the household, often behaving imperiously and accusing Wang Shi of mistreating her stepson.

Madam Cai’s overbearing attitude was even more pronounced in Tang Rong’s courtyard, where she acted like the matriarch, with no one daring to oppose her. It had been years since she had faced such humiliation, and instinctively, she raised her voice in protest.

“Second Madam, I am a servant of the young lord, not a concubine of the Marquis. Please do not mistake my role.”

“Mother!” Xin An exclaimed, rushing into Madam Xin’s arms. “Tang Rong truly is a liar! How could he have such an overbearing concubine? She’s so fierce! I don’t want to stay here anymore—I want to go home!”

Madam Xin immediately recognized Madam Cai’s true nature and suddenly felt relieved that her daughter hadn’t married Tang Rong. Patting Xin An’s back, she addressed Wang Shi, “Madam Tang, your household is far too unruly. The arrangement we discussed is off. We’ll be taking An’er home now.”

With that, mother and daughter turned to leave, but Wang Shi quickly stopped them, immediately scolding Madam Cai.

“How dare you, a mere servant, speak out of turn? The young lord is at fault here, and the Marquis himself instructed him to come and apologize. An’er has suffered a great injustice, and you think she can’t express her grievances?”

“Or perhaps you’ve grown so bold that even the Marquis’s words mean nothing to you? Are you trying to rebel?”

Tang Mo, who had been leisurely sipping tea, was inwardly thrilled by the unfolding drama. He had quickly come to enjoy having someone like Xin An by his side, matching his wit and fighting alongside him—it was a refreshing change.

Now watching Xin An effortlessly deal with this old shrew, Tang Mo felt even more exhilarated. When he noticed Tang Rong’s darkened expression, he put down his tea with a satisfied smile, preparing to step in.

“Elder Brother, I’ve held my tongue since this incident began, not wanting to strain our brotherly bond. But you’re taking things too far!”

“Xin An is new to the household and doesn’t know everyone yet. Look at this wet nurse of yours—dressed in fine silks, adorned with gold and jewels. What’s so strange about her mistaking her for Father’s concubine? Even Father’s concubines don’t dress this ostentatiously!”

“This woman lords over the household, barking orders at everyone. You knew she was uncouth and still brought her along. Is this your way of challenging Father’s decision and undermining me through her?”

Madam Cai opened her mouth to defend herself, but a sharp look from Lady Wang silenced her. Reluctantly, she knelt before Xin An and admitted her fault.

“It was my mistake to offend the Second Madam. I deserve to be punished,” Madam Cai said, slapping herself loudly across the face.

“The young lord’s wedding is a joyous occasion. I only dressed festively to match the mood and did not forget my place.”

She then removed her jewelry, one piece at a time. Xin An feigned shock, stepping back as if frightened. “Mother, the rules of this household are terrifying. We should leave,” she whispered.

Madam Xin’s displeasure was evident. “This household is truly upside down, with servants behaving like masters. We cannot let An’er remain in such a place.”

Turning to Wang Shi, she continued, “Madam Tang, please don’t try to stop us. If this is how your servants act in my presence, I can’t imagine how they’ll treat An’er when I’m gone.”

She then instructed her servants, “Gather An’er’s belongings. We’re leaving.”

Xin Huan arrived just in time to witness the commotion. Taking in the scene, he loudly declared, “Interesting! A master comes to apologize, and yet there’s a veiled threat? And that servant looks like she wants to kill someone with her sharp eyes. This household is run by its servants, it seems!”

Mother and son exchanged knowing glances. It was clear they intended to deal with Madam Cai thoroughly and embarrass Tang Rong in the process.

Wang Shi tried to intervene, but Tang Mo seized the opportunity to ingratiate himself with his mother-in-law, saying all the right things. Their mutual understanding was seamless. Sensing the perfect moment, Madam Xin sent Xin Huan to fetch Xin Kuan.

In the front hall, Xin Kuan, Tang Gang, and Lord Tao were just beginning to enjoy their meal when Xin Huan barged in, quickly recounting the events, embellishing them for dramatic effect.

“Father, they’re blocking us from leaving. They even sent that old servant to intimidate us. She’s so arrogant—it’s outrageous!”

Xin Kuan slammed his cup down in anger, while Tang Gang’s face turned red with fury. Lord Tao, meanwhile, silently cursed the Tang family for their incompetence and regretted the marriage alliance. Still, he couldn’t resist joining the scene to see how things unfolded.

Tang Rong never anticipated such a development. He had assumed that Xin An, mindful of her reputation, would endure the situation quietly. He thought an apology would suffice.

Madam Cai, still kneeling, felt little fear. As the wet nurse of the eldest son and a long-time servant of the late first wife, she believed even the Marquis would give her some respect.

When Tang Gang arrived, his fury erupted. “You insolent fool! I sent you to apologize, and you brought along this troublemaker?!”

Seeing Madam Cai kneeling with a defiant expression only fueled his rage. “Drag her out and give her thirty lashes for insubordination!”

The Tang family had risen through military exploits, and though they no longer commanded troops, household punishments still involved military-style discipline. Thirty lashes with a soldier’s cane would leave Madam Cai bedridden for months, effectively sidelining her.

Terrified, Madam Cai glanced at Tang Rong for help, but he didn’t dare plead on her behalf. Xin An, however, stepped forward, her voice trembling slightly.

“Marquis, this misunderstanding started because I failed to recognize her. Seeing her dressed so lavishly, I mistook her for one of your concubines. That was my fault. It’s understandable that she was upset.”

“She’s been a wet nurse to the young lord and has served this household for many years. Punishing her too severely might harm her health. Besides, it’s my wedding day—perhaps we should let this matter rest.”

Tang Mo silently applauded Xin An’s tact. Punishing Madam Cai might bring temporary satisfaction, but sparing her would make the Tang family appear magnanimous while further solidifying Xin An’s position.

Tang Gang’s expression softened. Though annoyed by Madam Cai’s past insolence, he now saw Xin An’s actions as gracious. “You’re lucky the Second Madam is kind-hearted. If it were up to me, I’d have had you beaten to death for your insolence.”

He punctuated his words with a sharp kick to Madam Cai’s chest, sending her sprawling and coughing blood. Crawling to Xin An, Madam Cai kowtowed. “Thank you, Second Madam, for your mercy. Thank you for sparing my life.”

Xin An feigned nervousness and reluctance. Moving closer to her mother, she murmured, “You may rise. I was mistaken about your identity, so please don’t take it to heart.”

The Tang family could never let Xin An leave. The late elder Marquis of Weiyuan, once a general, had voluntarily relinquished his military power after securing peace for the nation. Transitioning from military to civilian life was no easy task—the family required well-educated descendants, maintained connections in court, and cared for the veterans who had followed them. Who could say whether the Tang family might need to don armor again one day?

Each of these responsibilities entailed massive expenses. The Xin family had been the Tang family’s treasury, a fact well-known to many. The Tao family’s willingness to marry into the Tang family wasn’t just about the title—it was also about the Xin family’s wealth.

Seeing Xin Kuan on the verge of severing ties over Xin An, Governor Tao stepped forward to mediate. “Master Xin, please don’t be too hasty. I’m equally outraged by what’s happened, but the situation is what it is, and we must consider the long-term. The prosperity of our families and the future of our descendants are paramount.”

“Indeed, the young lord erred. However, on a joyous occasion, it’s easy to drink too much and for things to go awry. Both of our daughters have suffered enough. Taking this matter public would only bring greater loss to all parties involved.”

Tang Gang, the Marquis, quickly added, “Brother-in-law, our families have been close for many years, supporting each other like lips and teeth. Surely, we can sit down and resolve this matter calmly.”

“Believe me, I wanted nothing more than to beat that boy to death after this happened. But we can’t go so far, can we?”

Xin Kuan snorted. “You’ve said your piece, but in the end, it’s just a way to force me to agree, isn’t it?”

Turning to Governor Tao, he asked coldly, “Tang Rong is the legitimate eldest son, already recognized as the heir to the Marquisate. Once he inherits, the Tao family will reap endless benefits. And what does the Xin family gain?”

Tang Mo, silent until now, looked particularly pitiful. Yet he said nothing, holding his ground stubbornly while secretly feeling satisfied. His father-in-law was fighting for his interests—a rare luxury.

In the past, it had always been him and his mother striving for scraps, while Tao Yiran reaped the rewards and dismissed him as petty. Now, it was the Tao family who was outmatched by Xin Kuan’s sharp words.

Xin Kuan’s position was clear, leaving Governor Tao speechless. Tang Gang furrowed his brows, and Wang Shi, catching on, swiftly stepped in. “This is partly my fault for poor arrangements, and partly the young lord’s for letting his excitement get the better of him.”

“How about this: let the young lord apologize in front of both families, return the betrothal gifts to the Xin family, and transfer the household management rights to Xin An. Would this satisfy you, Master Xin?”

Ideally, both Tang Rong and Tao Yiran would apologize, but such a move would confirm that Tao Yiran had stolen another woman’s groom, something the Tao family would never allow.

Though unwilling to agree outright, Xin Kuan saw his goals nearly achieved. He knew how significant the household management rights were to a woman’s standing. Madam Xin, dabbing at her teary eyes, added, “It’s all for the children. What’s done is done, and no amount of punishment can change that. We’ll follow Wang Shi’s proposal.”

Reluctantly, Madam Tao unclenched her fists. Even if Tang Rong inherited the Marquisate, a marquis’s wife without control of the household held little real power and brought no tangible benefits to her family.

Tang Gang breathed a sigh of relief. But just as he was about to speak, Xin Kuan interjected, “From the beginning, has anyone bothered to ask the second son what he thinks?”

“His bride was stolen by his elder brother. Is an apology enough to resolve this?”

The room turned its attention to Tang Mo, who maintained his stoic yet aggrieved demeanor. “I will follow Father’s decision,” he said quietly.

Tang Gang, feeling some guilt, struggled to find a suitable compensation. Wang Shi, however, quickly suggested, “Last year, the Emperor gifted a 60-acre estate outside the capital for the Marquis’s birthday. It’s excellent land. Why not give it to the second son?”

Under normal circumstances, Tang Gang would have refused outright—an imperial gift was far too valuable to give away. However, faced with the current situation, he had little choice. After praising the estate, he nodded and instructed Wang Shi to hand over the deed immediately.

Tang Mo’s heart swelled with complex emotions. In his previous life, he had schemed tirelessly for this estate, only to lose his life in the process. Now, it had fallen into his lap with ease. Having someone fight for him was a truly novel feeling.

With the matter temporarily settled, lunch was served. Tang Gang invited Xin Kuan and Governor Tao to stay and dine, using the opportunity to mend ties over a few cups of wine. Now united by marriage, the three families needed to plan for the future.

Tang Rong exhaled deeply, relieved that everything had turned out as he hoped, despite the difficulties. He personally selected a few precious items and brought them to Xin An’s room as an apology.

When Xin An saw him, her fury flared anew, and she barely contained the urge to stab him on the spot.

“Though it was an unfortunate accident, I owe you an apology,” Tang Rong said. “Please rest assured, my second brother is a man of great character and virtue, no less than I. If you live harmoniously with him, your future will surely be smooth.”

“Is that a threat, young lord?” Xin An sneered. “If I don’t live harmoniously with him, and instead seek to cause you trouble, what will you do?”

Tang Rong bowed slightly. “A noble wife brings honor to her husband. I trust my sister-in-law will understand this.”

Xin An’s gaze swept over him, head to toe, as a bitter smile played on her lips. “A noble man is open and upright, while a petty man frets and schemes. You stole your brother’s wife and conspired with Tao Yiran to commit disgraceful acts. Do you think calling it an ‘accident’ can cover your filthy deeds?”

“I have every reason to believe this was your plan all along. You didn’t want to marry me but still wanted the reputation of being filial to your elders. You wanted the best of both worlds. So you bribed your servants to swap the brides and consummated the marriage as quickly as possible.”

“You know perfectly well that no one believes your drunken excuse. You’re just relying on others to save face for you while you shamelessly trample on theirs.”

“That’s absurd!” Tang Rong protested, though his voice lacked conviction. Tao Yiran was clearly a better match in terms of status and character, while Xin An, a merchant’s daughter, had always been the subject of mockery. Now, with his compensation in place, Xin An’s aggressive words only reinforced his belief that she was an unsuitable match.

“Please, Second Madam, mind your words. The young lord is upright and would never commit such acts. There must be some misunderstanding,” interjected a woman in her forties, dressed in a rich blue satin gown with gold ornaments.

It was Madam Cai, Tang Rong’s wet nurse and his most loyal servant. A former maid to Tang Rong’s late mother, she held significant sway in the household, often acting as though she were the matriarch herself.

Seeing her again, Xin An felt a surge of murderous intent.

“Is this the Marquis’s concubine?” Xin An asked with feigned innocence.

Madam Cai’s face turned red with rage, but Xin An continued with a mocking smile. “I thought I heard the Marquis’s concubines were all delicate beauties. No one mentioned there was one with such… stature.”
